By William Baxter.

Poem is based on the true act of heroism which took place on an Iowa Stormy Night of July 6th, 1881.

*********************************************************

In 1881, Kate Shelley;

Young Kate Shelley,

Carried her Father's Lantern in her hand.

She risked her life,

To save the Midnight Train,

Was the bravest teen in the land.

Was the bravest teen in the land.

*******************************************************

One stormy night, Kate Shelley;

Young Kate Shelley,

Saw Ol' Engine 11 go down in Honey Creek.

She saw two men trapped,

She ran to get help,

Into the night so stormy and bleak.

Into the night so stormy and bleak.

*******************************************************

Kate Shelley;

Young Kate Shelley,

Crawled over The Des Moines

River Bridge without hesitation.

With her lantern blown out,

She crossed in total darkness,

To reach the Moingona Station.

To reach the Moingona Station.

*******************************************************

Kate Shelley;

Young Kate Shelley,

Reached the station all bloody and worn.

The Midnight Train was halted,

The two men were rescued,

The "Iowa Heroine" was born.

The "Iowa Heroine" was born.
